Facebook is a social platform that aims to build an inclusive community where people can connect to one and other. A lot of our social interactions nowadays take place online, but the way in which we communicate online today is causing us to alienate people with autism.
Facebook Decipher is a new feature of Facebook that caters to people on the autism spectrum. It uses Deep Machine learning and Sentiment analyses to break down ambiguous phrases into a straightforward annotation. It also allows these visual thinkers to choose a string of visuals from a special keyboard and have Decipher offer back a range of suggested verbal translations that they can choose from.
Being faced with a completely open brief where we ourselves could identify the brand, the problem, the emerging tech we wanted to use etc. was both exciting and overwhelming. We started by compiling lists of problems that we wanted to solve, the emerging and new existing tech around, and a list of large global brand and worked to see if there were any instant clicks.
What we found through our secondary research, interviews with professionals in various autism support societies, is that while there were many initiatives to support children with autism, a lot of the time the adults and teenagers were disregarded. "On their 22nd birthday, people with autism suddenly lose their entitlement to services under the Individuals with Disabilities Educational Act—and enter the much chancier world of adult services."
